Quick Post & Reminder

    Hi everyone.

I have added a little Fall to our kitchen island using my vintage dough bowl and other things I had stored away.

The Pottery Barn lanterns were purchased  last year when they were reduced by 70%.   I didn't care for the black bottom so I just dry brushed them with gray craft paint. I used them this summer filled with seashells and the paint effect reminds me of driftwood.

The Open House Party will start this evening and I have another beautiful home to share.
I hope you will link up all the beautiful Fall decor I am seeing around blogland and any projects, recipes, great buys, ect. that you would like to share.

I have gotten some great reviews from those of you that have tried the homemade chalk paint and I would love to see your projects at the Open House Party.

Thanks for visiting and all the sweet notes you leave.  I truly appreciate each of you!

    Hugs,
    Sherry

Adding Fall With DIY Chalk Paint

I am really enjoying seeing all of your Fall decorating and I had to get busy adding Fall to our house.

Many of you know our family room is already decorated in Fall colors with the green walls and painted faux leather ceiling.  Though I do love the room this time of year, the dark colors make it hard to get a decent picture.  Add the overcast days and there is no chance of a good picture.

I couldn't wait any longer to show you what I have been up to.
    See the new mirrors?

In the picture below you can see how the colors on the mirrors tie in with the ceiling.

Below is how the mirrors looked when I bought them.  I knew the black frames would have to go so they were painted with the homemade chalk paint.  No sanding or priming and two coats covered the black shellac finish.

Here is another victim of the DIY chalk paint.

The $3.00 GW urn above is plaster and had a high gloss paint finish originally.  I painted it with white paint mixed with calcium carbonate.  I must say the calcium carbonate powder is my favorite additive just because it is a finer powder than Plaster of Paris. Several of you have asked where I bought it and here is the link Swanson Vitamins.

I wanted the urn to look like an old terracotta one so I mixed some brown and orange craft paint and added it in spots to look like it had been chipped.  In the picture the spots look red but in person they are  terracotta colored.  Ralph Lauren Smoke glaze was applied and quickly wiped off.

I made an arrangement for the dining room using things I already had.  The gourds tied to
a rope are a favorite and they were purchased at Michaels after Thanksgiving sale last year.

I added this simple arrangement on our kitchen table using a wine basket and large pine cones.

I hope you enjoyed seeing the new paint projects and Fall decor.  I'll see you Wednesday evening for the Open House Party.

Ruffling Some Feathers & A Winner

Thank you so much to everyone that left such kind (and funny) comments on the
Make Your Own chalk paint post .

I do have to say that not everyone was so kind.

Obviously this post ruffled a few feathers.

I received four very NASTY remarks left by "anonymous" posters.

Don't bother looking for them because I deleted them immediately.
Lets just say I was PERSONALLY attacked for sharing with you my inexpensive way to
     get a chalky paint look.

I was called stupid, ignorant, a bit.. and cheap!   I had to laugh at the last one.
The poster obviously is not a reader of this blog or they would have known I consider CHEAP  a compliment.

I am not sure where all this hostility came from.  I know not everyone will like my projects or agree with my post and that is okay with me.  I always encourage constructive criticism but not hurtful remarks.  I was not trying to mess with another person's income nor did I ever say the other chalk paint products were not good products.  My only intentions were to share what worked for me.

    Enough Said.

    Now on to happy thoughts...

I  want to share a post with you from a new blogger that just tried one of the paint additives and loves the results.  Check out  Kristybelle's for her review.

Also, we have a winner for my recent giveaway of trinkets brought back from our recent vacation.

Thank you to everyone that entered.

Congrats to  Ceekay @ Thinkin Of Home

Take care and have a wonderful weekend.

Open House Party

Welcome to the Open House Party.
You will find the link to join the party at the bottom of this post.

I thank you for visiting and I look forward to seeing what you link up this week.  I have another wonderful home for us to tour today but before we get started I want to remind you of my GIVEAWAY.   You have until midnight on 9/22/11 to enter.

The owner of the featured home this week was a guest on the Nate Berkus show which was all about decorating on the cheap.  When Nate saw a picture of her $395 room he said " When I saw the room I thought it was the cover of a European magazine".

I am delighted to feature the beautiful home of Kathy @ All About Vignettes.
You can watch the episode of the Nate Berkus show from Kathy's sidebar.

    Enjoy the Tour.

Kathy gives directions on how she covered these books.

    Son's room

    Love this porch!

Kathy took a rusty metal garden table top and made a clock out of it.  I am so going to
    copy this idea.

Thank you Kathy for opening up your home for the Open House Party.  To see more of
this fabulous home visit  All About Vignettes.

    On to the party...

I'll be back later with more homemade chalk paint  projects.

Make Your Own Chalk Paint For $4.00

    Hi Everyone.

I haven't used the very popular chalk paint that is all over blogland but I have seen several pieces up close and personal.  I love the chalky appearance of the paint but not the limited colors or the price.

So what is a girl to do?
Make her own chalk paint of course!

I got to experimenting with different products and this is what I came up with.

Chalk is actually Calcium Carbonate and the product can be purchased in health food stores and at numerous on-line stores.  The cost is around $4.00 for 12 ounces.

Whiting powder will also give you a similar look for approximately $3.00 for a 1 pound package.  I could not find this locally but it is available on-line.

Plaster of Paris also works well and can be purchased at Michaels or Home Depot.  Home Depot sells 3 pounds for approximately $6.00.

To get the chalk paint look just add ANY ONE of the above to your latex paint.  The amount you use depends on how chalky you want the paint to look when dry.  I experimented using the sample size paints   and used a ratio of 2/3 paint to 1/3 product.  You may need to add a few drops of water to the paint and occasionally stir it if gets too thick.

I saved and washed out glass jars to mix the paint in.  I have used the paint over and over again and each time I just added a couple of drops of water and stirred really good.

Do you remember the vanity I painted recently?  Well,  it was my first trial using the homemade chalk paint.  For this I used the Calcium Carbonate and it worked beautifully.  No priming, no sanding required and it covered in two coats.  It also was very easy to distress.

For the vanity I used approximately 1/4 of the 12 ounce jar of Calcium Carbonate plus a sample size pot of paint.  The total cost was less than $4.00

I just finished painting two mirror frames with latex paint mixed with Whiting Powder and some small items using the Plaster Of Paris.  All of these worked great and I'll be posting pictures soon.

I did not use wax on the vanity but I did use Briwax on several other projects and I liked the
    sheen it gave them.

You can also create custom colors by adding acrylic craft paint to the latex and powder mixture.  Chalk paint is cheap to make and now you can have it in any color.

    Added 9/19/2011
Just to answer a few questions.

No need to prime or sand the furniture if it is in good condition
If you are using the Calcium Carbonate make sure and buy it in POWDER form and not tablets.
There are no exact measurements here. More powder means more of a chalk look.
I used Behr and Martha Stewart paint sample pots (around 7 oz each) and added approximately 2/3 paint to 1/4 powder.
I have added a Pin It button located on the left. Hope this works

I would love to hear from you if you give this a try.

Design Schizophrenia

Recently someone asked me what I would call my decorating style.
The only answer I could come up with is
     Schizophrenia!

I see homes that are one style and think how beautifully pulled together they are.  I wish I could select a style that I love and stick with it.  The problem is I love way too many different decorating styles.

Country French is a favorite as evident in our bedroom.

    and the living room

But..I also like the warm Tuscan Style of our family room..

    especially in the evening

I also like to add a little fun or something different to the mix such as my lime green office or...

Or a cog in the dining room

It's no secret that I love English transferware

Of course I also have Italian Pottery scattered around the house

A few pieces of Quimper add to the mix

    A dash of feminine

I had to add some shabby chic

I cannot forget the coastal accents

The chaos is most evident in the dining room!

In this room English transferware meets Italian pottery, shabby chic, European art, coastal design and Country French!!

Ignore the not so attractive chandy.  When the house went on the market I took the one we bought down and put back up the original.

I have always had a somewhat eclectic style but now it appears to have gone beyond that.

The coastal accessories will be packed up soon to make room for the Fall decor.  I can't bear to get rid of the transferware or the Italian pottery.  I am in still in love with Country French so what is a girl to do?

    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Are you a design schizophrenic too?

    Hugs,

    Sherry
